conduit_cat @ 4:01pm: Golden Eagle eyeballs a Red-tailed Hawk!
Saturday, November 7th, the boys and I went to visit my tree at the Adams County Fairgrounds nature preserve. It was absurdly beautiful out, the golds, browns, and reds highlighted, and all a sunny 72 degrees.

At the initial fork in the path we saw a large bird in a tree across the river:

Curious, Jay climbed the hill a little ways to glean a better view. 'twas a Golden Eagle, intently eying a bird on the ground!

After the eagle took off, the bird on the ground made off in the opposite direction. It was a red-tailed hawk (it's blurry in the pic)!

yohjikudo, posting in naturalliving @ 7:53pm: Dry eyes
I have a question for ya'll! Since the end of September I have been experiencing some dryness around my eyes. The skin is raw and peeling and even just water hurts. I've tried using oil and hydricortizone cream and it seems to help a little but the dryness always comes back. I'm almost ready to go to the doctor with this but want to give a few natural remedies a try first. My skin doesn't respond well to chemicals and I really don't want to pay the outrageous visit fee for my doctor to see me for 5 minutes and just prescribe a prescription dose of hydricortizone cream. So any suggestions? I just tried some cucumber tonight and the skin around my eyes is feeling pretty good but who knows what it will be like in the morning? Oh just as a side note I've tried Vitamin E as well as Olive oil. The skin around my eyes really didn't like the E and the olive only worked so-so.

veiled, posting in naturalliving @ 5:26pm: Face wash recommendation for those with sensitive skin.
I had been using Aveda's acne face wash, for about 9 months. It worked great but didn't want to dish out the money for the refills every month. Whole Foods sells a brand called Collective Wellbeing ($12), and I decided to check out the Oatmeal & Raspberry cleansing paste a week ago. This is the best face wash I've ever used. It smells nice, cleanses really well, and doesn't have acne medicine in it. I have eczema so I've always been a fan of oats in the bath & the occasional face mask. For my budget, I'm super happy with it. So far it's keeping my skin clean, clear, and more moisturized. I still use a small amount of EveryDay Shea lotion on the super dry areas of my face, but overall it does not dry out my skin.

My new foster kitty! This is Woo Woo. Well, that's the name she came with. Her parents are Mr. & Mrs. Woo. Dad was a full-blood Himalayan and mom was a Siamese/Snowshoe mix. I've got her to try to socialize her because at her first adoption event for the shelter, she was hissing, spitting, clawing and biting. I've renamed her Witch Hazel (or just Hazel to her friends). Partially because it fits and partially because I don't care how much baby-talking she gets, I'm not calling her 'Woo-woo.' Just. no.

Total active volunteers this week: 40

^Owwww.

We have several admins and high volume folks who are taking time off right now due to personal reasons (and don't any of you dare feel guilty about it, because you need that time off and this is a volunteer thing, after all), so we're going to need all available hands on deck this week in order to keep things under control.

Remember: just five touches gets you on my weekly report! And if you have questions about requests, we're here in IRC and [info]learn_support for assistance. :-)

katydido, posting in naturalliving @ 12:30pm: Two questions
1. So many people rave about the Desert Essence Natural Tea Tree Oil Facial Cleansing pads, but I don't think my skin likes them. :( Any insight/tips?

2. Why do people say dairy is bad for the skin? Is there evidence for this? I worry that if I cut it out, even if my skin clears up a bit, my bones will resent me later on...

Thanks!

Thank you to everyone who helped with names for my sister's new little kitten! She has to run everything by her husband and two kids, so I'm not sure what will happen, but I will post new pictures and let you know of her name when they decide :)

I thought I'd share some pics of MY babies! I haven't posted them in a while. They are now 5 months and 1 week old, and SOOOO big!! Neville looks like a full sized cat to me!

themachinestops, posting in note_to_cat @ 10:50am: Dear Taz, Oxford, Macro, and Pistol (but especially Oxford, because I'm the one that scoops your poop, I know what it looks like),

Thanks so much, darling children, for shitting all over the carpet while we were on vacation. I guess we were too trusting to think that you guys could spend 48 hours without human supervision. And we know you did it for attention, because the boxes got scooped right before we left and you hid it in plain sight. Seriously, cats, what the fuck? It's not the first time you've been left alone and while we could have had Grandma over to check in on you, we figured you could entertain one another well enough so she wouldn't have to drive an hour here and back. You've stayed home alone before for even longer periods of time. At least you were self-aware enough to stay away from the bed last night, knowing that your affection was not required after an hour of steam-cleaning and swearing.

Oh, and real smooth move, crapping in your own cat bed too. Very smart. This, children, is why you will never get the vote.

No love,
Mom and Dad

P.S. Seriously what the fuck
